Sky Lakes Medical Center | Live Smart | Fall 2018

On the cover: Children play in Kit Carson Park, which is much improved after a major renovation funded by Sky Lakes and developed in partnership with the city of Klamath Falls. Klamath Commons features include equipment to encourage outdoor play. Klamath Commons, the newest park in Klamath Falls, is another investment by Sky Lakes in the community to encourage more physical activity. A new play area at Kit Carson Park that opened last year north of downtown was also funded by the medical center as a gift to the community. “When we invest in a park, with its inviting green space and opportunities for exercise and relaxation, we leverage many positive things for the community,” says Paul Stewart, Sky Lakes President and CEO. “It sends the very clear message that we value the benefits those things bring naturally.” Honoring a pioneer The new downtown park—on the block bordered by 11th and 12th streets and Main Street and Klamath Avenue—is dedicated to the memory of the late Stephanie Van Dyke, MD, MPH. Dr. Van Dyke was instrumental in making Klamath Falls the first Blue Zones Project demonstration community in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Van Dyke was also a strong advocate for individual commitment and institutional policy changes that enable lifestyle and environmental changes to help people be healthier. Paving the way to better health Klamath Commons includes many fixtures to encourage outdoor recreation, as well as a natural amphitheater and a water feature. Sky Lakes also helped create the Geo Trail at Oregon Tech and provided funding to support development of the Spence Mountain Trail west of Klamath Falls. “Projects like these tell the world that we are willing to invest in the things that are important to our community,” says Sky Lakes Board Chairman John Bell.
